Duty Charges

Below is a summary of the new duty charges per bottle as of February 2026. Please note that these vary depending on the ABV and are subject to change. Please get in touch if you require more information:

Transparent Billing and Rate Calculations

Annual Billing: Clients are invoiced annually based on the wines stored in the preceding year.
Case Equivalents: A case is defined as 9 litres of wine (typically twelve 750ml bottles), ensuring clarity in pricing.
Pro-Rata Charges: Storage fees are charged on a per-bottle basis, and wines stored for part of a month will be billed accordingly.

How to Use Our Bonded Storage

Purchase en primeur or under-bond wines from Hedonism Wines.
Automatically enjoy twelve months of free storage at our bonded storage when you open your storage account.
After twelve months, your storage will continue at the rates outlined above, with quarterly invoicing.
When you are ready to receive your wines, simply request delivery. Most orders are fulfilled within 3-4 working days.

Insignia is the flagship wine of Joseph Phelps. The 1987 vintage is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Merlot aged for 15 months in French oak barrels and puncheons. The 1987 vintage was characterised by low crop yields and intense berry flavours. Rich, black currant flavours, exotic tobacco leaf aromas and a spicy cherry-like component.

Good medium red. Cool, slightly medicinal aromas of red berries, flowers and mint, with lead pencil and mineral notes. Juicy and intensely flavored, with a lovely sweetness. At this tasting, the 1987 revealed a dark amber color, a saline/Chinese black tea character, and hit the palate with some dusty tannins, earth, cedar wood and spice characteristics. The wine never fully expanded or opened up. It is certainly well-made and pure, but it seems angular, austere and lacking the charm, flesh and concentration of the finest vintages.

I remember liking the 1987 more early in its life than I did at this vertical tasting. Only 2,500 cases were produced. The wine finished with 13.1% alcohol, and the blend was 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, a whopping 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Merlot. For the first time, the production was split evenly between estate and growers fruit. It was a relatively warm growing season with an early harvest, but low yields. In 1987, Phelps had their lowest Cabernet Sauvignon production since 1976, and virtually the entire Napa Cabernet crop was in the cellars by the end of September.Robert Parker30th November 2013

Innovation and Quality in Napa

Founded in 1973, Joseph Phelps Vineyards is family-owned winery celebrated for its commitment to crafting world-class, estate grown wines from Napa Valley and the Sonoma Coast. Joe Phelps was a building contractor from Colorado who began investing in Napa Valley vineyards in the early 1970s, producing the first vintage of his now-famous "Insignia" in 1974 - one of the first super premium Bordeaux blends from Napa.

The current winemaker is Ashley Hepworth, who initially joined Joseph Phelps in 1999 as an intern. Alongside Insignia, Ashley and the team also make a number of varietal wines with the Freestone Vineyards Chardonnay being a notable high point.
