Joh Jos Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese 2008 is a classic late-harvest Mosel Riesling that highlights the transparency of the Wehlener Sonnenuhr’s grey slate soils. The wine presents a delicate profile of white peach, green apple and elderflower, underpinned by a pervasive smoky minerality. The 2008 vintage’s high acidity provides a refreshing lift, making the wine feel crisp and energetic on the palate. At nearly two decades old, the initial sugar has receded into the background, allowing the site’s crystalline structure and floral nuances to shine. The finish is precise, clean and marked by a distinctive stony tension.

The sense of clarity in the Joh. Jos. Prum 2008 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese extends also to an aromatic display unclouded by the sort of fermentative notes found in the corresponding Spatlese and Kabinett when I tasted those. Honeysuckle, heliotrope, distilled herbal essences, apple and quince practically explode from the glass, and lush marzipan, vanilla cream, quince preserves, and apple jelly as well as liquid floral essences inform a nevertheless refreshing palate. Savory saline as well as stony and somehow crystalline expressions of things mineral add counterpoint and complexity, and this finishes with extraordinary, saliva-inducing persistence. “The sort of further selection of botrytis grapes that we did this year in Graach,” remarks Manfred Prum, “would not have succeeded in Wehlen” where no further Auslese was essayed, and I would not be surprised if the inclusion in this wine of parcels whose fruit might more often have been destined for auction is part of what renders it so impressive. - David Schildknecht

Pale golden yellow. Lively aromas of peach pit, honeysuckle and candied lemon. Bright and spicy, but with a creamy, velvety quality contributed by the sweet, plush papaya fruit. Herbal essences heighten the pleasing finish. Doesn't try to be an over-the-top show reserve, but this is a lovely auslese.Joel Payne1st January 2010

Much less smoky/reductive than all the other Prüm 2008s tasted so far. More honey and lemon but in a sophisticated framework of zesty citrus acidity. So incredibly long and effortlessly sustained. (JH)
