Joh Jos Prüm Bernkasteler Badstuber Riesling Spätlese 2008 is a light-bodied white from the blue slate slopes of the Mosel. The 2008 vintage was a late-ripening, `classical` year in the Mosel that produced wines with extraordinary focus and longevity. This Spätlese displays a reductive nose that evolves into notes of green apple, wet slate and white flowers. The palate is defined by a racy acidity that cuts through the delicate residual sugar, creating a vibrating, tension-filled mouthfeel. After 18 years, the primary fruit has moved toward secondary notes of petrol and dried citrus peel. It is a precise and crystalline Riesling that showcases the purity of the Badstuber site, concluding with a long, zesty and mineral finish.

Yeasty aromas of fresh apple, mint and lemon oil. Supple and rich but with a delicacy to its papaya flavor, this spatlese is kept alive by its brisk acidity. The spicy finish displays a clear, refreshing slate character.Joel Payne1st January 2010

Slate and steel, tropical lime, fragrant and spicy. Babyfaced, but approachable now. Much less abrasive and therefore much more appealing than the Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett. (RH)
