With family history dating back centuries and ownership of some of the best parcels of vines in the Northern Rhône, Jean Louis Chave is undoubtedly one of the greatest producers of Hermitage Rouge and Blanc. As one of the largest landowners in the Hermitage appellation Chave has vines spread across 9 of the finest lieux-dits, with the Rouge being sourced from vines ranging between 50 and 85+ years of age. The 2000 is a wonderful release of exceptional elegance, purity and seamlessness. Full-bodied, but not opulent or over-the-top, in style, it offers up delicious notes of black fruits, wild herbs, tobacco, liquorice and earthy minerality. Though perfectly in its drinking window this should continue to evolve over the next 5-10 years.

Vinous
Saturated ruby. Superripe aromas of blackberry, blueberry, clove, minerals and black licorice. Very ripe but precise and penetrating. At once lush and powerful; seamless but with terrific thrust. Black fruit, flint, spice and dark chocolate flavors offer considerable density and verve. Finishes with substantial noble tannins that arrive very late. Has all the elements for longevity. Give this 10 to 12 years before pulling the cork. This comes across as a bit denser than the young 2001 but not finer. The Chaves clearly did a superb job of harvesting in 2000.Stephen Tanzer1st January 2003
