Hermitage La Chapelle 2007 from Paul Jaboulet Aîné is a Syrah from the Northern Rhône. The 2007 growing season was relatively warm and provided a wine with a more supple and approachable character than the structured 2013. It exhibits an expressive nose of red fruits, liquorice, tapenade and dried flowers supported by a rich, medium-bodied palate. At nearly 20 years of age, the tannins have softened into a silky texture, though the wine remains underpinned by a persistent granitic minerality.

A relatively cool vintage, and it's great to taste this in the same lineup as the 2003. Expect a satisfying curl of violet and peony showcasing Syrah goodness. Just so juicy and delicate, with hidden power and reserves of cocoa, raspberry, liquorice, campfire and incense. Caroline Frey's 2nd vintage, 100% new oak, Denis Dubourdieu consultant. There are still traces of the toasted oak that drew criticism at the time, but it is integrated at this point, and at 20 years old this 2007 is stunning, still young, fully expressive.Jane Anson27th August 2025

Opaque purple. Captivating aromas of boysenberry, dark cherry, pepper, spices, cocoa powder and smoky minerality. Then intense and penetrating in the mouth, with brilliantly fresh dark berry and kirsch flavors lifted by notes of cinnamon and star anise. Finishes pungent and impressively long, with a palate-saturating whiplash of dark berry and spice flavors. This wine calls for at least decade of aging. Only 900 bottles were slated to be sent to the American importer.Josh Raynolds1st January 2010
