Hermitage La Chapelle from Paul Jaboulet Aîné is an iconic wine from the Rhône Valley. It is regarded as one of the top expressions of Hermitage, a prestigious appellation known for producing powerful and age-worthy Syrah wines. The 2003 vintage of Hermitage La Chapelle is notable for its warm and dry growing conditions, which resulted in ripe and concentrated grapes. The wine is characterized by its intense and opulent style, with a full-bodied profile and ample fruit flavours. It typically exhibits aromas of blackberry, black cherry, plum, and liquorice, accompanied by hints of spices, herbs, and smoky nuances.

Revisiting this hot vintage after a few decades is always interesting, and as you might expect with the location of La Chapelle, with its wind-strewn slopes and altitude of 400m, it has retained freshness. Majoring on cumin, cinnamon, soy on the opening beats, this is rippling with silky tannins, red liquorice, still feels young, with cranberry fruits giving lift alongside the spiced blackberry, incense, graphite, liquorice, good lift on the finish. Deep, saturated ruby. Intensely spicy aromas of blackberry, bitter cherry, tobacco and minerals, with a complicating note of black pepper that became more pronounced with air. This is quite fresh and lively for the vintage, showing tangy red and dark berry flavors and a solid, chewy texture. Finishes with considerable finesse.Josh Raynolds1st January 2006
