Henri Giraud PR 20-90 NV is a distinctive Champagne, crafted from a blend of 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay. This cuvée draws from a solera initiated in 1990, incorporating select reserve wines meticulously aged in oak. Known for its unique expression, the wine reveals an aromatic profile featuring notes of citrus, apple and subtle hints of honey and flint. The palate presents a fine effervescence, showcasing a saline minerality balanced with a structured core of fruit. Henri Giraud, rooted in Aÿ, prioritises traditional craftsmanship and oak aging in their production.

A true perpetual cuvée, drawn from two tanks that nourish both Esprit Nature and MV, Giraud’s NV PR 90-20 was disgorged in May 2024 with a dosage of five grams per liter. Comprising 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay, it reveals delicately high-toned aromas of golden apple and nutty tones, mingling with spice and beeswax. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, rich and vinous, with a fleshy fruit core supported by vibrant acidity, culminating in a long, saline finish. This perpetual reserve spans vintages from 1990 to 2020—hence its name. - Kristaps Karklins

A Boutique Grand Marque

The Giraud-Hémart family have cultivated grapes in the Champagne region since 1625. Based in Äy, the family only started to produce wine for themselves in 1990. The current owner of the house is 12th-generation Claude Giraud. His son, Emmanuelle Giraud-Patour manages the company while his son-in-law, Sébastien Le Golvet, is the chef de cave.

Henri Giraud’s top cuvée, Fût de Chêne, is a Pinot Noir-dominant blend with a smaller proportion of Chardonnay, using the ‘Petit Pinot’ clone of Pinot Noir which has been grown solely in Aÿ since 1804. Meanwhile the new Esprit Nature cuvée is a Pinot Noir-dominant blend with Chardonnay and 50% reserve wine, with maturation taking place in small casks and ovoid vats. Production at Henri Giraud is limited to just 250,000 bottles a year – a remarkably small number in comparison with the Grandes Marques, which dictates that demand is always high.
