A multi-vintage champagne made in Aÿ by Henri Giraud, the oldest Champagne house in France that is still owned by the founding family. Fût de Chêne is a blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes, using the `Petit Pinot` clone of Pinot Noir which has been grown solely in Aÿ since 1804. The wine is refined, displaying a creamy texture and effortless integration. Flavours of baked fruit pie, plums, bread dough, crystallized honey, ground clove, coconut flakes and ginger on the finish.

The MV 16 is bright, fresh and airy and yet has the natural richness of Aÿ that Giraud fans have come to expect. Apricot, tangerine oil, nutmeg, cinnamon, chamomile and dried flowers all meld together in a creamy, ample Champagne that hits all the right notes. A Champagne of towering presence, the MV 16 is classy, understated and undeniably alluring. It is also one of the most impressive Champagnes I have ever tasted from Claude Giraud. Even in the early going, the 70% new oak is so well-integrated. This set of new releases is full of highlights, but the MV 16 is especially fine. Don"t miss it! Dosage is 6 grams per liter. Disgorged: December 11, 2020. (Originally published in May 2021)Antonio Galloni1st November 2021

A Boutique Grand Marque

The Giraud-Hémart family have cultivated grapes in the Champagne region since 1625. Based in Äy, the family only started to produce wine for themselves in 1990. The current owner of the house is 12th-generation Claude Giraud. His son, Emmanuelle Giraud-Patour manages the company while his son-in-law, Sébastien Le Golvet, is the chef de cave.

Henri Giraud’s top cuvée, Fût de Chêne, is a Pinot Noir-dominant blend with a smaller proportion of Chardonnay, using the ‘Petit Pinot’ clone of Pinot Noir which has been grown solely in Aÿ since 1804. Meanwhile the new Esprit Nature cuvée is a Pinot Noir-dominant blend with Chardonnay and 50% reserve wine, with maturation taking place in small casks and ovoid vats. Production at Henri Giraud is limited to just 250,000 bottles a year – a remarkably small number in comparison with the Grandes Marques, which dictates that demand is always high.
