Henri Giraud Dame Jane Rosé NV showcases a meticulous approach to Champagne production, rooted in both tradition and innovation. The blend consists primarily of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, sourced from exceptional terroirs, positioned to offer distinct regional expression. Notably, the wine undergoes ageing specific to Giraud`s methods, with extended periods on the lees and a judicious use of oak barrels, imparting depth and nuance. Founded in 1625, Henri Giraud is recognised for its dedication to heritage, reflected through the unique processing methods that characterise the Dame Jane Rosé.

The NV Rosé Rose Dame-Jane is light and airy in the glass. Crushed flowers, sweet crushed berries, white pepper and mint are all beautifully lifted. Translucent and gracious, the Dame-Jane is quite a departure for a house that was previously known for rich, opulent Champagnes. The Dame-Jane is done with an "Oeil de Perdrix" base in which Pinot is given a short time on the skins for added color and structure. Right before bottling, touches of Chardonnay and still Pinot are added to fine-tune the blend. The Dame-Jane is aged entirely in sandstone terracotta, an approach that works beautifully. This release is based on 2017, with 40% reserve wines. Dosage is 6 grams per liter. Disgorged: March 21, 2019. (Originally published in May 2021)Antonio Galloni1st November 2021

A Boutique Grand Marque

The Giraud-Hémart family have cultivated grapes in the Champagne region since 1625. Based in Äy, the family only started to produce wine for themselves in 1990. The current owner of the house is 12th-generation Claude Giraud. His son, Emmanuelle Giraud-Patour manages the company while his son-in-law, Sébastien Le Golvet, is the chef de cave.

Henri Giraud’s top cuvée, Fût de Chêne, is a Pinot Noir-dominant blend with a smaller proportion of Chardonnay, using the ‘Petit Pinot’ clone of Pinot Noir which has been grown solely in Aÿ since 1804. Meanwhile the new Esprit Nature cuvée is a Pinot Noir-dominant blend with Chardonnay and 50% reserve wine, with maturation taking place in small casks and ovoid vats. Production at Henri Giraud is limited to just 250,000 bottles a year – a remarkably small number in comparison with the Grandes Marques, which dictates that demand is always high.
