Haut-Brion 2006 is a full-bodied Bordeaux red wine from the Pessac-Léognan region. Situated in Graves, Château Haut-Brion holds the prestigious distinction of First Growth status as awarded in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, firmly establishing its reputation as one of the best producers in the region. The estate predominantly dedicates its vineyard to red grape varieties, encompassing 48 hectares of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Presented here in magnum is their Grand Vin from the 2006 vintage. "Less obvious than La Mission, this is more about charcoal, grilled berries and crisp minerality, with a near-perfect tightrope of freshness. Gripping and full of uplift, it starts slowly, builds in volume, but remains subtle and restrained. There’s no excess here; everything is in balance." Jane Anson, 2023
Tasted at Bordeaux Index's annual 10-Year On tasting in London. The 2006 Château Haut-Brion has a more ostentatious bouquet than the comparatively reserved La Mission: quite feisty blackberry, briary, kirsch and red plum scents, hints of leather and sage tucked just underneath. This is a bouquet determined to make an impression! The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, well-judged acidity, a gentle build to a concentrated, earthy, truffle-tinged finish that lingers long in the mouth. Medium ruby-red. Inviting aromas of plum, warm stones, red licorice and menthol. Suave, gentle and elegantly styled; distinctly sweeter and lusher today than the La Mission, with even more mid-palate depth. Showing more red fruits today as well, with pungent minerality giving the wine lift and juiciness. Finishes with suave but substantial building tannins. Last year this wine was showing its spine while La Mission was more opulent; in bottle it's the other way around.Stephen Tanzer1st May 2009

Pessac Leognan's Only First Growth
Grapes are thought to have been grown on the Haut-Brion estate in Pessac-Léognan since the Roman era, while the first recorded mention of the property is in 1423. The wine has had a long, illustrious history and is famously mentioned by Samuel Pepys in his diary of 1663. Nowadays, Haut Brion is considered by many to be one of the finest wines in the world and was ranked in the First Growth category during the 1855 classification of Bordeaux wines.
Renowned for its first wine (40% of production), Haut Brion, the estate also produces a spectacular second wine from young vines, Le Clarence de Haut Brion, in addition to a white, Château Haut-Brion Blanc, the Clarendelle branded wines and a second white, La Clarté de Haut Brion (which also takes grapes from La Mission). Spanning 53 hectare, the estate is planted to 50 hectares red varieties and 3 hectares white. The reds produced are beautifully balanced and complex, often around 14% abv and made from a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, typically aged in 80% new oak. The Haut-Brion Blanc meanwhile is a Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc blend, produced in small quantities and aged in a mix of new and one-year oak.
