Château Haut-Brion has a reputation for producing one of the greatest and longest-lived white wines in Bordeaux. The blend for this vintage is 81% Sauvignon blanc and 19% Semillon and being a warm vintage this bottling is showing more stone fruits than citrus fruits, yet is superbly structured and richly textured. Gorgeous notes of lemon peel, white flowers, lime and white grapefruit with delicate ginger aromas and crushed rocks on the finish. This wine will benefit from a few years of bottle age but is still delightful now.

After a summer as hot and dry as 2018, the almost biting Sauvignon Blanc character of the Haut-Brion Blanc is welcome, especially when given the gunsmoke edge that you find here. Plenty of depth and complexity, with white pear, mango, pineapple, citrus and grilled almond that deepen as the wine opens. The Mission Haut-Brion Blanc could have been included here also, but I give the Haut-Brion Blanc the slight edge in this particular vintage. 50% new oak.Jane Anson1st October 2021

The white Haut-Brion 2018 offers pretty honeysuckle and lemon curd notes, with hints of spice cake and apple pie, together with cedar. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a lively line cutting through the rich, ripe layers, and an oily texture, with a long finish. Lisa Perrotti-Brown9th February 2023

The 2018 Haut-Brion Blanc is very similar on the nose compared to the barrel tasting a year earlier, offering quite pungent scents of gooseberry, nettle, white flowers and lemon thyme, all well defined with moderate complexity. The palate is balanced with a grassy, malic entry, more so than in barrel. I appreciate the energy of this Haut Brion Blanc, and it has gained some weight toward the finish. Monitored over 24 hours, it improves further and evolves into a quite delicious white Pessac-Léognan. Neal Martin21st March 2021

Pessac Leognan's Only First Growth

Grapes are thought to have been grown on the Haut-Brion estate in Pessac-Léognan since the Roman era, while the first recorded mention of the property is in 1423. The wine has had a long, illustrious history and is famously mentioned by Samuel Pepys in his diary of 1663. Nowadays, Haut Brion is considered by many to be one of the finest wines in the world and was ranked in the First Growth category during the 1855 classification of Bordeaux wines.

Renowned for its first wine (40% of production), Haut Brion, the estate also produces a spectacular second wine from young vines, Le Clarence de Haut Brion, in addition to a white, Château Haut-Brion Blanc, the Clarendelle branded wines and a second white, La Clarté de Haut Brion (which also takes grapes from La Mission). Spanning 53 hectare, the estate is planted to 50 hectares red varieties and 3 hectares white. The reds produced are beautifully balanced and complex, often around 14% abv and made from a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, typically aged in 80% new oak. The Haut-Brion Blanc meanwhile is a Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc blend, produced in small quantities and aged in a mix of new and one-year oak.
