Château Haut Brion Blanc 1994 is a medium-bodied blended white wine from the Pessac-Léognan region of Bordeaux. Château La Mission-Haut-Brion is one of the most revered properties in Bordeaux and is in the very highest echelon of Graves producers. From the early-ripening 1994 vintage, this bottling is a blend of 55% Sauvignon Blanc and 45% Semillon. "This spectacular dry white Graves is a likely candidate to rival the 1989 produced at Haut-Brion. The harvest began at the end of August. The wine possesses the texture of a great Burgundy grand cru given its thick unctuosity. The superb nose of honeyed fruits and smoky oak is far more developed and ostentatious than its sister, the more subtle and backward Laville-Haut-Brion. It is awesomely rich, with a chewy texture and great purity and definition. This is a ravishingly intense, full-bodied, dry white wine that should age well for 30+ years." Wine Advocate, 1998

Resiny, spicy, coconut-scented nose of almost exotic ripeness and extraordinary depth. Huge and fat, with a mouthfilling, lanolin texture; yet manages to be vivid and fresh (partially blocked malo?). Citric salts and iodine on the finish give the wine superb grip. Extraordinarily long aftertaste. This extremely young wine has the structure of a red wine and may not reach its peak for 12 to 15 years. The best young white Graves I've yet tasted, and perhaps the single best wine made in Bordeaux in either '94 or '95. 97.Stephen Tanzer1st May 1996

Pessac Leognan's Only First Growth

Grapes are thought to have been grown on the Haut-Brion estate in Pessac-Léognan since the Roman era, while the first recorded mention of the property is in 1423. The wine has had a long, illustrious history and is famously mentioned by Samuel Pepys in his diary of 1663. Nowadays, Haut Brion is considered by many to be one of the finest wines in the world and was ranked in the First Growth category during the 1855 classification of Bordeaux wines.

Renowned for its first wine (40% of production), Haut Brion, the estate also produces a spectacular second wine from young vines, Le Clarence de Haut Brion, in addition to a white, Château Haut-Brion Blanc, the Clarendelle branded wines and a second white, La Clarté de Haut Brion (which also takes grapes from La Mission). Spanning 53 hectare, the estate is planted to 50 hectares red varieties and 3 hectares white. The reds produced are beautifully balanced and complex, often around 14% abv and made from a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, typically aged in 80% new oak. The Haut-Brion Blanc meanwhile is a Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc blend, produced in small quantities and aged in a mix of new and one-year oak.
