Haut-Bailly 2010 presents a restrained profile initially, revealing earthy notes of damp soil and subtle spice as it breathes. The palate unfolds with a blend of blackcurrant, plum and hints of tobacco, showing a firm structure with well-integrated tannins. The finish showcases nuances of graphite and cedar, characteristic of the estate`s terroir.

The 2010 Haut-Bailly was served at dinner following the Giscours vertical. This has a powerful and almost primal bouquet with copious scents of black cherries, crushed stones and violets—the latter perhaps more prominent than previous bottles. The palate is, again, perhaps due to impeccable provenance, backward and obviously a decade away from its peak. But what a peak that will be, promising intense black fruit notes laced with tobacco and sous-bois. Quite audacious on the finish, the 2010 is a gem.

The 2010 Haut Bailly has consistently been a fantastic wine, and at seven years of age I have no reason to alter that view. It has a mixture of red and black fruit on the nose, wet stone, black olive and a light marine influence. It is still backward compared to other vintages, but it has not relinquished one iota of its intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. This is a voluminous Haut Bailly, one that is beginning to stretch its muscles, with a gentle grip in the mouth with a wonderful saline finish. There is huge potential locked into this wine, but patience is needed. Tasted March 2017. - Neal Martin
