Situated in the village of Gevrey-Chambertin, Domaine Fourrier has been in the capable hands of Jean-Marie Fourrier since 1994. A wonderfully aromatic Pinot Noir, packed with plump red cherries, meaty, earthy complexity and gentle liquorice notes. Structured by refreshing acidity and a glorious richness on the palate.

Medium red, a bit less saturated than the Clos Saint-Jacques. Ripe but closed on the nose, with some oak showing today. Sweet, dense and thick in the mouth, but a bit less expressive today than the CSJ, hinting at spicy red berries. Is the acidity here a bit less ripe than that of the CSJ or is this just more backward? Finishes with slightly dusty, oak-influenced tannins. A bit awkward today and difficult to taste: this will need six or seven years of patience. Incidentally, Fourrier compares 2004 to 2001 and believes that the majority of his 2004s will shut down in bottle in the near future.Stephen Tanzer1st March 2007

Jean-Marie Fourrier has been at the helm of his family domaine since the mid 1990s and has steadily risen to become one of Gevrey-Chambertin's most important vignerons. Having served an apprentice under the famous Henri Jayer before a brief stint at Domaine Drouhin in Oregon, Jean-Marie returned to France with a clear vision to raise to improve the quality of his wines to be the equal of any in the Côte de Nuits.

Grapes are destemmed after picking and fermentation is kept on the cooler side. A 36 - 48 hour maceration precedes the fermentation, punching down is manual and malolactic fermentation is restricted through temperature control. These are superbly elegant wines which push their ethereal fruit character to the fore.
