This 30-year-old Speyside single malt was laid to rest at the Glentauchers distillery in 1990 and bottled for the reimagined Connoisseurs Choice series from Gordon & MacPhail in October 2020. Aged in refill American Hogshead casks and bottled at 50.4% ABV, the nose is filled with citrus notes, followed by some lemongrass and nutty aromas. On the palate, more citrus fruits, marzipan and some peppery undertones.

Long ferments and slow distillations

The Charles Doig-designed Glentauchers distillery was constructed on Tauchers Farm, close to the town of Keith in Banffshire, in 1897. It was founded by James Buchanan and Co as a source of malts for the company’s Buchanan’s and Black & White blended whiskies.

Following a period of inactivity amid the general decline in whisky sales in the 1980s, Glentauchers was purchased by Allied Distillers in 1989. It then became part of the Chivas Brothers portfolio following the latter’s acquisition of Allied.

The distillery’s new make – the product of long ferments and slow distillation – produces a light, floral malt whisky which has since the 1990s been a central component of blends such as Ballantine’s, Teacher’s and Chivas Regal. Since the 1990s Glentauchers has rarely been seen as a single malt, with the exception of independent bottlings from Gordon & MacPhail. However, in 2017 a 15-year-old Glentauchers was released under the Ballantine’s brand.
