The Gigondas Les Hauts de Montmirail Brusset 2023 is a structured red blend primarily made from Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre grapes. The wine presents pronounced earthy notes alongside straightforward ripe cherry and plum characteristics. While the wine shows a firm tannic backbone, it also carries a refreshing acidity that balances its weight. Over time, it may unveil subtle nuances of herbs and mineral undertones, reflecting the diverse terroir of the Southern Rhône. The Brusset family has been cultivating vines in this region since 1947, focusing on traditional methods to produce authentic wines.

A blend of 50% Grenache Noir, 30% Syrah and 20% Mourvèdre, the 2023 Gigondas Les Hauts de Montmirail opens with an elegantly reductive bouquet of spices, smoke, oak and licorice. Medium- to full-bodied, structured and deep, it’s layered and concentrated, with a fleshy core of fruit framed by toasty, velvety tannins, concluding with a long, mineral finish. Matured in 50% new oak, it remains well balanced.

Partially aged in new French oak barrels, the 2023 Gigondas Les Hauts de Montmirail performs well, albeit coming in a tad below the top-notch 2022 I tasted last year. Black cherry, licorice, spicy subtleties, leafy characteristics and ripe strawberries are all pushed forward. Full-bodied, round and refreshing, the 2023 checks out with good length on the complex finish.
