Domaine Dugat-Py was formed in 1979 through the marriage of Bernard Dugat and Jocelyne Py, consolidating their respective sets of vineyards. Today the estate consists of approximately 5 hectares of vineyards, including holdings in several Premier Cru and Grand Cru sites. This particular release comes from ‘Les Evocelles’ a village level lieux-dit where the estate owns a 0.8-hectare parcel. 2009 was a warm and dry year, characterized by favourable weather conditions that allowed the grapes to ripen fully and develop excellent concentration.

(from vines averaging 75 years of age, cropped at just 23 hectoliters per hectare; Dugat bought another parcel before the 2009 harvest) Deep red. Perfumed aromas of blackberry, licorice, violet and bitter chocolate. Wonderfully sweet and lively; more harmonious than the village wines, offering solid mineral-driven energy. The long finish features tongue-dusting tannins. This is very promising.Stephen Tanzer1st January 2011

The 2009 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles is deep, dark and sensual in its inviting layers of dark fruit, spices and menthol. Clean, mineral notes frame the long, intensely satisfying finish. This saw 100% new oak, but you would hardly know it based on the wine’s exceptional balance. Anticipated maturity: 2024-2049.

Bernard Dugat farms 10 hectares of vineyards, 6.5 of which he and his family own outright. The Dugat-Py wines are breathtaking for their richness and depth. Despite their sheer concentration, the wines retain tons of vineyard and vintage character. These are some of the most viscerally thrilling, exciting wines I tasted on my recent trip through Burgundy. The only 2009 I wasn’t able to taste was the Pommard, which had been bottled just prior to my visit.

A Respect for Tradition

Founded in the late 1980s by Pierre Dugat and now run by his son Bernard, Domaine Dugat-Py have swiftly risen to be recognised as one of the most exciting wineries in the Côte d'Or. Although Bernard produces excellent wines from the communes of Fixin and Pernand Vegelesses, Dugat-Py is primarily known for their excellent Gevrey-Chambertin, which run from Villages level all the way to Grand Cru. Vines are venerable, averaging 65 years, and all vineyard work is done in a traditional manner, including the use of a horse-drawn plough.

Dugat Py have been fully organic since 2003 and are moving towards biodynamic practices in some vineyards. Winemaking is low intervention and the wines are bottling without fining or filtration. The wines are matured in French oak barrels from renowned coopers François Frères and 100% new oak is used for the Premier Cru and Grand Cru wines.
