Domaine Fourrier is a family-owned wine producer situated in the village of Gevrey-Chambertin. The estate is currently run by Jean-Marie Fourrier who took over from his father in 1994, at the age of 23. Before that, Jean-Marie worked as an apprentice for both Henry Jayer and Véronique Drouhin at Domaine Drouhin in Oregon. This Gevrey-Chambertin is made from old vines, some of them planted in 1928. 2009 was a particularly good vintage for red Burgundy, producing well-structured wines with rich, luscious fruit.

Good deep red. Musky aroma of raspberry, blueberry, smoke, crushed rock and game. At once sweet and taut, with an impression of lift and energy rare for the vintage. Really lovely fruit here. Fourrier told me he liked the effect of elevage in mostly older casks in 2009. More new oak would have speeded up the evolution of the wines, he explained. That would have required using more sulfur dioxide but we still would have lost fruit.Stephen Tanzer1st March 2012

Jean-Marie Fourrier has been at the helm of his family domaine since the mid 1990s and has steadily risen to become one of Gevrey-Chambertin's most important vignerons. Having served an apprentice under the famous Henri Jayer before a brief stint at Domaine Drouhin in Oregon, Jean-Marie returned to France with a clear vision to raise to improve the quality of his wines to be the equal of any in the Côte de Nuits.

Grapes are destemmed after picking and fermentation is kept on the cooler side. A 36 - 48 hour maceration precedes the fermentation, punching down is manual and malolactic fermentation is restricted through temperature control. These are superbly elegant wines which push their ethereal fruit character to the fore.
