The Fourrier Combe Aux Moines Premier Cru, bottled in the Magnum (150cl) format, presents the 2018 vintage in a size ideal for slow, complex evolution. This particular vineyard expresses a powerful, dark-fruited Gevrey character married with a soaring, almost airy finesse. The 2018 shows a mix of ripe black cherry and redcurrant fruit, underpinned by a deep, stony minerality and a fine tannic frame, promising a decade or more of optimal drinking.

Still harboring a bit of malic acid – not to mention a lot of CO2 – Fourrier 2008 Gevrey-Chambertin Combe Aux Moines had to be tasted at above-cellar temperature since the tank in which it resides had been gently warmed. An attractively yeasty, subtly toasty note – taken together with the contrast of creamy texture and berry-brightness – conveys simultaneous impressions of red currant- and cherry-filled pastry and boeuf en croute. Palpably dense yet buoyant and vibrant, this needs to shed some superficial tartness but looks on course to provide enormous satisfaction over the coming 10-12 years or more. - David Schildknecht

Jean-Marie Fourrier has been at the helm of his family domaine since the mid 1990s and has steadily risen to become one of Gevrey-Chambertin's most important vignerons. Having served an apprentice under the famous Henri Jayer before a brief stint at Domaine Drouhin in Oregon, Jean-Marie returned to France with a clear vision to raise to improve the quality of his wines to be the equal of any in the Côte de Nuits.

Grapes are destemmed after picking and fermentation is kept on the cooler side. A 36 - 48 hour maceration precedes the fermentation, punching down is manual and malolactic fermentation is restricted through temperature control. These are superbly elegant wines which push their ethereal fruit character to the fore.
