Fleurie Poncié Philippe Viet 2023 showcases the distinctive characteristics of the Fleurie appellation. Crafted from Gamay grapes sourced solely from the Poncié lieu-dit, this wine reflects the unique terroir of the appellation. Philippe Viet, having transitioned from an IT career to winemaking, established his domaine in 2019 and embraces low-intervention methods. The wine undergoes whole-bunch fermentation with gentle extraction, and is made with minimal sulphur. With vineyard practices rooted in organic farming, Viet’s wines are positioned as both accessible and capable of cellar ageing, appealing to those seeking terroir-driven expressions in Beaujolais.
91 Vinous
The 2023 Fleurie-Poncié was raised 50% in puncheons and 50% in stainless steel. This has an endearing, pure bouquet with blackcurrant and raspberry fruit tones. The wood is nicely assimilated though it could use another few months to fully integrate. The palate is medium-bodied with dark berry fruit at the fore. It is crunchy and saline with a brisk, open-knit finish. Give this a year and you'll have a fine Fleurie on par with the previous vintage.
89 Robert Parker
The 2023 Fleurie Poncié opens with vibrant aromas of bright cherries and spice before deepening into richer nuances of cooked fruits and dark chocolate on the palate. This Fleurie is marked by its introspective complexity, presenting a medium to full-bodied frame imbued with palpable tension. Mouth-coating chalky tannins provide a firm structural foundation, guiding a broad-shouldered and angular progression that evokes an image of a grapevine hunkering its roots deep into the soil in search of water.
