Etna Rosso Calderara Sottana Terre Nere 2009 is a red wine from the northern slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily. This cru is produced from Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio vines planted on shallow volcanic soils rich in basaltic pebbles. The high altitude and unique volcanic terroir produce wines with a distinct smoky minerality and firm, dusty tannins. Fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts, followed by 18 months of ageing in French oak barriques and tonneaux. The wine features notes of red fruit, graphite and roses, often described as having Pinot-like characteristics. It possesses a solid spine of acidity and a powerful structure that reflects the brooding nature of the volcanic soil.
