Ermitage Le Méal Chapoutier 2008 is a single-vineyard Syrah, reflecting the distinct terroir of the Méal hillside in the Rhône Valley. The vineyard, characterised by its high terraces of shale and clay, features vines approximately 50 years old. Hand-harvested at full maturity, the grapes undergo fermentation in small cement vats, allowing for a focused extraction of flavours. Ageing occurs in new and one-year-old casks for 14 to 18 months, with natural clarification. Chapoutier, known for its respect for terroir, champions biodynamic farming practices to enhance vineyard health.
92 Robert Parker
A cool, rainy and difficult year in the Northern Rhone, the 2008 Ermitage le Meal is still beautiful and has a semi-opaque, ruby color, complex notes of spiced meats, saddle leather, incense and sweet red fruits, and medium to full-bodied richness on the palate. Elegant, with fine tannin and excellent purity of fruit, enjoy it anytime over the coming decade.
92 Vinous
- Opaque ruby. Sexy, expansive aromas of raspberry and cherry pie, star anise and cola. Sweet and silky in texture, with palate-staining red fruit flavors and sweet oak spiciness. A floral quality comes up with aeration and lingers on the sappy, impressively long finish. Extremely seductive and approachable now, especially with a little time in a decanter.

Passion and Drive

One of the oldest producers in the Rhône Valley, M. Chapoutier was established in 1808. The arrival of a young Michel Chapoutier, who took over management of the family domaine in 1990, saw huge changes and a renewed drive for excellence, focussing especially on the diverse terroir of the Rhône. Michel has embraced biodynamic practices in recent years and attributes much of the increase in quality to this approach. The wines are generous and fruit-forward at the entry level, moving towards the sublime as we move up the quality ladder.

Two of the greatest wines in the portfolio are 'De L'Orée', an Hermitage Blanc made from 100% Marsanne and 'Le Pavillon', a full-bodied, expressive Hermitage rouge that effortlessly rubs shoulders with the world's greatest Syrah.
