Le Méal is one of Hermitage`s finest granite-soil lieux-dits, and Ferraton`s old vine Syrah from this steep slope is one of the appellation`s benchmark wines. The 2009, from an outstanding, ripe Rhône vintage, is deep and inky with dense black fruit, liquorice and roasted spice, backed by rich, plush tannins and real concentration. Aged 50% in new oak, it is powerful and built for the long haul; give it a lengthy decant now or keep cellaring towards its 2030s peak. Match with venison or truffled dishes.

Vivid ruby. Red and dark berry compote aromas are complemented by notes of apricot and violet, along with a spicy overtone. Highly exotic and nicely concentrated, offering pliant black raspberry and boysenberry flavors that become spicier with air. Finishes sweet and long, with impressive energy, silky tannins and a lingering floral quality.Josh Raynolds1st March 2012
