Eric and Martine Rodez are the eighth generation of winemakers of a domain established in 1757. Cuvée des Grands Vintages is a non-vintage blend of 70% Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vinified in wooden casks to achieve greater complexity and body. It is rich, broad and vinous with delicious notes of quince, orange marmalade, peach and honeycomb.
93 Vinous
(70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay, all barrel-fermented; 4 g/l dosage; made from fruit grown in Ambonnay and aged on its lees for eight years before disgorgement; L09-13): Bright yellow-gold. An intriguingly perfumed nose evokes poached pear, orange zest, sweet butter and honey, along with a smoky quality and a chalky mineral overtone. Chewy, very deep citrus and orchard fruit flavors are complicated by suggestions of toasted brioche, white truffle and candied fig. Finishes very long and smoky, with resonating floral and mineral qualities. I'd serve this complex Champagne, which comprises wines from 15 different vintages dating back to 1995, with an indulgent, buttery poultry or shellfish dish.Josh Raynolds1st January 2015

Bold, Expressive Champagnes

Based in the renowned Grand Cru village of Ambonnay in the Montagne de Reims, Eric Rodez is a leading producer of fine Champagnes. With a Champagne-making history stretching back many generations, the domaine is now run by Eric, his wife Martine and his son, Mickaël (the ninth generation of the winemaking family).

Eric Rodez owns 9ha of Pinot Noir vines and 7ha of Chardonnay along the south and southeast-facing slopes of Ambonnay. The vineyards are farmed biodynamically while, in the cellar, about 70% of Rodez Champagne is fermented and aged in oak.

The character of Rodez Champagnes is heavily defined by the judicious blending of reserve wines with the new-vintage wine, with Eric using up to 10 different vintages in his final cuvées – his experience in the cellar at Champagne Krug surely a factor there. Whatever the particular cuvée, Rodez Champagnes are consistently elegant, vinous yet deliciously complex.
