Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Riesling Spätlese 2015 is a late-harvest Riesling from the Saar region of Germany. The Scharzhofberg is one of the most famous vineyards in the world, featuring grey slate soils that yield Rieslings of unmatched mineral purity and longevity. The 2015 vintage was exceptional, providing fruit with high concentration and electric acidity. This Spätlese offers a profile of lime zest, white peach, crushed stones and a hint of elderflower. Despite its residual sugar, the wine remains weightless and incredibly energetic on the palate. It possesses a saline finish and a structural tension that will allow it to develop for several decades.

White peach, quince and lime dominate on the nose as well as on a luscious, subtly creamy yet insistently bright palate, which is rich in glycerol but with striking buoyancy as well as an underlying firmness that suggests the absence of any superfluous fat. Sweetness, too, is so ideally judged and supportive that it is the last thing one thinks about. Hints of cress, mint, yeast and raw almond serve for simultaneous invigoration and cooling caress. The sole Scharzhofberger Spätlese of the Müller 2015 collection offers a wonderful opportunity to experience this site and estate at their best without having to bid with deep pockets at the Trier auctions.David Schildknecht1st May 2017

Egon Muller

King of the Mosel Valley

Broadly considered to make some of the greatest Rieslings in the world, the Egon Müller winery has been in the same family since 1797. Farming on the steep slopes of the Mosel valley, the estate owns around one third of the famous Scharzofberg vineyard, one of the region's greatest. That parcel includes three hectares of ungrafted vines - a rarity in any European grape growing region.

Extreme care is taken in the vineyard and all grapes are hand harvested. Fruit is pressed without any skin contact to preserve freshness and fermentation takes place in large, one thousand litre casks in cool cellars beneath the valley where they rest for around six months before bottling. The dry wines are clean and fresh with an unmistakable elegance while the sweeter wines (Spatlese, Auslese and TBA) offer a richness and depth of flavour that make them some of the greatest in Germany.
