Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Riesling Eiswein 2002 is a renowned sweet wine from the Saar region of Germany. Crafted from the famed Scharzhofberg vineyard, celebrated for its steep, slate-rich landscape, this Eiswein showcases grapes picked at the peak of ripeness. The 2002 vintage benefited from ideal conditions, producing an Eiswein with complex layers of flavour. Expect concentrated notes of candied citrus, peach and honey, complemented by a vibrant acidity.
Vinous
The first Eiswein here since the memorable if not monumental 1998 (see Issue 88), this displays apple jelly and white peach with a hint of horseradish in the nose. Concentrated peach and apple essences on the palate. The palate is creamy and fat yet somehow simultaneously bracing and lilting. Electrically charged, the acidity nevertheless doesn't stick out as raw or tart. Rich in fruit skin phenolics and spice, this wine nevertheless avoids any bitterness. 1 star.David Schildknecht1st January 2004

King of the Mosel Valley

Broadly considered to make some of the greatest Rieslings in the world, the Egon Müller winery has been in the same family since 1797. Farming on the steep slopes of the Mosel valley, the estate owns around one third of the famous Scharzofberg vineyard, one of the region's greatest. That parcel includes three hectares of ungrafted vines - a rarity in any European grape growing region.

Extreme care is taken in the vineyard and all grapes are hand harvested. Fruit is pressed without any skin contact to preserve freshness and fermentation takes place in large, one thousand litre casks in cool cellars beneath the valley where they rest for around six months before bottling. The dry wines are clean and fresh with an unmistakable elegance while the sweeter wines (Spatlese, Auslese and TBA) offer a richness and depth of flavour that make them some of the greatest in Germany.
