Egon Müller Scharzhof Riesling QbA 2014 hails from the esteemed Mosel region, known for its exceptional Rieslings. The estate, founded in 1797, is recognised for its meticulous vineyard management, particularly in the Grand Cru Scharzhofberg site. This 2014 vintage displays aromas of ripe apple, subtle floral notes and a hint of mineral character typical of its terroir. On the palate, it reveals a precise balance, showcasing fresh acidity alongside flavours of stone fruit and a faint herbal undertone. The finish is clean, reflecting the lineage of this renowned producer.

Tart, appley and firm, this bundle of energy practically sizzles on the palate and penetrates with salivary gland-squeezing intensity, and arguably sets the tone for all of Egon Müller’s 2014s. It might be the estate’s intro-level wine, but I would give it some time in bottle before revisiting.

Egon Muller

King of the Mosel Valley

Broadly considered to make some of the greatest Rieslings in the world, the Egon Müller winery has been in the same family since 1797. Farming on the steep slopes of the Mosel valley, the estate owns around one third of the famous Scharzofberg vineyard, one of the region's greatest. That parcel includes three hectares of ungrafted vines - a rarity in any European grape growing region.

Extreme care is taken in the vineyard and all grapes are hand harvested. Fruit is pressed without any skin contact to preserve freshness and fermentation takes place in large, one thousand litre casks in cool cellars beneath the valley where they rest for around six months before bottling. The dry wines are clean and fresh with an unmistakable elegance while the sweeter wines (Spatlese, Auslese and TBA) offer a richness and depth of flavour that make them some of the greatest in Germany.
