Established in 1930, Egly-Ouriet is a fourth generation, family-run champagne producer currently overseen by Francis Egly. The estate covers approximately 9 hectares of vineyards which are mostly Grand Cru plots in Ambonnay, Bouzy and Verzenay. This is their non-vintage Grand Cru expression, a blend of approximately 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay, aged for 48 months on its lees. It is a medium-bodied champagne, with vibrant acidity and notes of plums and white flowers.

Even though it was only Disgorged: a few months ago, the NV Brut Tradition Grand Cru is super-expressive. The Brut Tradition brings together parcels in Ambonnay, Bouzy and Verzenay that, together, yield a Pinot-driven Champagne with tremendous breadth as well as cut. Red fruit, dried flowers, mint, spice and lemon confit are some of the aromas and flavors that build in this wonderfully open-knit, inviting Champagne from Egly-Ouriet. Disgorged: July, 2020.

The 1989 Grand Cru Vintage Brut (from 100% grand cru vineyards owned by the proprietor) is a medium straw-colored, full-bodied Champagne with considerable intensity, and more depth than is found in many Champagnes. It is rich and dry, with a buttery, toasty apple fruitiness, and fine, lingering effervescence. This offering is not an aperitif-styled Champagne. It is meant to be drunk with food.

Quite evolved and full on the nose. Lovely delicate mousse – not very explosive, just gentle. Pure and very long. Serious wine rather than simple champagne. (JR)
