Founded in 1930, Egly-Ouriet has become a cult Champagne producer with a loyal fanbase around the world. The family-owned estate covers approximately 9 hectares of vineyards which are mostly Grand Cru plots in Ambonnay, Bouzy and Verzenay. Les Prémices is the result of an equal blend of the three classic Champagne grapes, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier, all grown in the village of Trigny. It is a vinous champagne, with a lovely balance between the chalky minerality and the notes of red apples and plums.
90 Robert Parker
Based on the 2020 vintage (50%) and incorporating reserve wines from 2019 and 2018, Egly`s latest release of the NV Les Prémices was disgorged in September 2024 with one gram per liter dosage. As ever, it was entirely vinified in tank and derives from the village of Trigny in Massif de Saint-Thierry, not far from Vrigny. It is the vineyard that the Egly family took over in 2016 from Clémence’s mother’s side, and the vines today are 40 years old, facing southeast and growing in sandier soils than those in Ambonnay. Opening in the glass with aromas of orange zest, red apple and spices, it is full-bodied, ample and textural, with succulent acidity and a rich core of fruit. The one cuvée in the range that could ever be described as straightforward, it is, stylistically, somewhat weighty in comparison to the rest of the range.

A new wine in the Egly range, the NV Brut Les Prémices is a Chardonnay/Pinot Noir/Meunier blend from Trigny, all 2016 vintage. Bright floral notes and the natural richness of Pinots come together nicely in this entry-level bottling. There is good energy, but naturally not quite the textural breadth of the top wines. Disgorged: July, 2020, with 36 months on the lees.Antonio Galloni1st November 2020
16.5 Jancis Robinson
With the exception of the Pinot Meunier vines in Vrigny, the 9-hectare estate is exclusively grand cru, stretching across Ambonnay, Bouzy and Verzenay. Pinot Noir is planted on 7 ha, Chardonnay on 2 ha, and the average age of the vines is more than 35 years. 36 months on the lees, disgorged July 2021.Deep gold. There’s a whole lotta flavour going on here! Very lightly beery with some hoppy notes (these two impressions arrived in my brain separately and I didn’t realise there could be some connection between them). Lots of serious impact with good balance – not too sweet, not too austere. (JR)
