Échezeaux 2009 from Domaine Forey Père et Fils is a Grand Cru red from Flagey-Échezeaux. The 2009 vintage was warm and solar, providing a wine with immense textural volume and ripe, succulent fruit. Forey’s style is traditional and honest, utilising old vines and a restrained oak programme to preserve the site’s natural character. It exhibits notes of black plums, liquorice, earth and sweet balsamic herbs. After 15 years of evolution, the tannins have integrated into a rich and powerful frame. It possesses a persistent and savoury finish, reflecting the limestone and clay soils of the vineyard. This bottling balances the natural opulence of the vintage with a firm structural backbone.

The 2009 Echezeaux comes across as big, fat and brooding. This shows quite a bit of concentration but the oak seems overdone and masks much of the vineyard character. Overall the Echezeaux is not as elegant as the finest bottles here. Anticipated maturity. 2017-2027.
Regis Forey began harvesting on September 13. His wines did a total of eight(!) weeks of cuvaison, by far the lengthiest vinifications of any grower I visited. Forey used 100% new oak for all of his 1ers and Grands Crus. The wines were bottled between December, 2010 and February, 2011 with no fining or filtration. These are unusually open, fruit-driven wines, even within the context of 2009. The Grand Crus are not necessarily better than some of the 1ers. I am not sure how well the wines will age, but in most cases they will certainly deliver considerable pleasure early on.

Good red-ruby. Very reduced nose hints at black raspberry and blueberry. Densely packed and lush but not overly sweet. Really saturates the mouth with concentrated dark fruit flavors. Finishes very ripe, complex and long, with a distinctly chocolatey element and oak-driven tannins. Less elegant than the Gaudichots but impressively concentrated. Forey told me his premier cru yields approached 50 hectoliters per hectare, but that this one was just 38.Stephen Tanzer1st January 2011
