The Cabernet Sauvignons of Randy Dunn are renowned for huge intensity of colour, expansive personality, towering tannic structure and fantastic longevity. The 1996 is a powerhouse of black, blue and purple fruit with remarkable depth of flavour. This should be at its absolute peak though could well last another decade.

- Healthy dark medium red. Warm-year scents of plum, raspberry liqueur, mocha, hot rocks and gravel struck me as Graves-like. Large-scaled and velvety, with a slight edge of herbs conveying a wider range of ripeness than usual for this bottling. Perhaps still a bit youthfully disjointed but savory, very rich and chewy. Finishes with surprising acidity and substantial if slightly unrefined tannins that dust the tongue and teeth. (13% alcohol)

A Howell Mountain Hero

Randy Dunn has been quietly making some of Napa Valley's finest Cabernet Sauvignon since the early 1980s - focussing on a single varietal and a single locale - Cabernet Sauvignon from Howell Mountain. Farming 42 acres vineyards, Randy has decided against expansion and keeps tight control over how his fruit is farmed and how his wine made. In Randy's words - "we’ve done our best to care for these vines so that they produce a wine that tastes like Cabernet Sauvignon from Howell Mountain".

The estate currently produces two wines - Howell Mountain Cabernet, produced using fruit source only from vineyards located on Howell Mountain, and Napa Valley Cabernet that includes some fruit from the valley floor. Both wines are 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and aged for 32 months in French Oak.
