Château du Tertre is a Fifth Growth property situated in Arsac, within the Margaux appellation. The estate covers approximately 52 hectares of vineyards of which 70% are now biodynamic. The 2009 vintage is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 8% Petit Verdot. A medium-bodied, approachable wine, with notes of forest berries, hints of sage and mint.

The 2009 du Tertre has a slightly smudged pencil box and autumn bonfire scented bouquet. A little rough-hewn compared to its peers. The palate is better with chewy and quite saturated tannin, plenty of spicy black fruit with sage, white pepper and graphite, leading to a ferrous finish. I have found this Margaux vexing and inconsistent since release. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting. Neal Martin1st March 2019

Lightly treacly nose. Interesting. Very different sort of nose. The fruit is kept in check – not too aggressively sweet. Tamped down to provide much more of a classic Margaux style but with lots of pleasure. Very cool indeed. (JR)
