Rooted in values of quality, stewardship, tradition and innovation, the Dominus Estate team produces distinctive wines that express the essence of the historic Napanook vineyard. The 2003 vintage is a red blend composed of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. Boasting an aromatic nose of violets, raspberries and worn leather. Flavours begin discretely with essences of cumin and dark red fruit that build up to a suppleness and elegance that is enveloping. The finish is long, fragrant and fresh, with an intensity of tobacco and truffle notes. Sold in glorious large format.

Good ruby-red. Rich, smoky, expressive aromas of plum, currant, licorice, tobacco, game and leather. Suave and lush in the mouth, with explosive flavors of currant and graphite. Quite suave and pliant, offering excellent balance and full, broad, well-buffered tannins. This is just over 14% alcohol. The non-decanted version showed aromas of plum, redcurrant, mocha and nutty oak, and hints of tobacco leaf and licorice in the mouth. Though it was tighter and more firmly tannic, it also showed considerable early complexity. This distinctly claret-like vintage may well merit an even higher score with six to eight years of bottle aging.Stephen Tanzer1st May 2006

A First Growth in Napa

Along with Opus One, Dominus is one of the greatest examples of applying the Bordelais approach to winemaking to the great vineyards of the Napa Valley. Grapes are sourced from Yountville, specifically the historic Napanook vineyard, from which the winery's second wine takes its name.

The 'Grand Vin' is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot - a classic Bordeaux blend. After vinification, around 30% of the wine is loaded into new oak barrels for 15 months before bottling. Initial releases of Dominus met with mixed reviews, but since the late 1990s, the winery has established itself as one of the greatest in America.
