Dominio del Águila Peñas Aladas Gran Reserva 2018 is produced from a collection of old vineyard plots nestled within a pine forest, with many vines exceeding 100 years in age. This vintage, predominantly crafted from Tempranillo, is complemented by lesser plantings of Cariñena, Bruñal, Bobal, Albillo and Garnacha. The grapes are meticulously hand-harvested, undergoing natural yeast co-fermentation in tank, followed by an extensive 51 months in French oak barrels. Dominio del Águila was founded by winemaker Jorge Monzón and focuses on minimal intervention winemaking while maintaining the expression of their prized vineyard sites.

They didn`t produce the 2017 vintage of the single-vineyard wine from some of their oldest vines, so after the 2016 they jumped to the 2018 Peñas Aladas Gran Reserva. It has a very intense nose of licorice, flowers (decayed violets), wet chalk, spices (nutmeg), some nuts (pecan) and a volatile twist with great freshness. It matured in French oak barrels for 53 months. It has a fine thread, a chalky and dry feeling, fine tannins and a dry and very tasty finish that`s almost salty. It has all the components and the balance with them to develop nicely in bottle. It should age effortlessly for 30 years. It`s very impressive, but it doesn`t reach the elegance of the 2016. 1,729 bottles and 42 magnums produced. It was bottled in March 2023. - Luis Gutiérrez

The 2018 Peñas Aladas Gran Reserva is 95% Tempranillo with other varieties from La Aguilera, Ribera del Duero. It was aged 53 months in mostly French oak barrels. Intense aromas of plum, blackberry, violet, lavender and a hint of volatile acidity enhance expression. The palate is dry, medium-bodied and flavorful, with blackberry and chalky tannins. Compared to the more delicate 2016, this is a richer, more sun-kissed wine with added volume and energy. Joaquin Hidalgo24th June 2025

Forward-Looking Ribera

In contrast with the high-alcohol, super-concentrated wines with which Ribera is typically associated, Aguila prizes elegance and restraint in its wines – all made made from carefully selected old-vine plots of Tempranillo, Blanca del País, Bobal, Garnacha, Albillo and Tempranillo Gris. All are farmed organically or biodynamically.

The domaine’s reserva, made from a plot of vines more than 100 years old and aged for 35 months in old French oak, is a masterpiece in concentration with restraint. Also look out for the clarete – an extraordinary barrel-aged rosé-coloured wine made with co-fermented white and red grapes. This traditional style of wine in northern Spain had been largely forgotten in Ribera del Duero until Jorge campaigned to have it recognised in the appellation.
