Dominio del Águila is one of Spain’s most exciting and sought-after domains, founded by the visionary winemaker Jorge Monzón and his partner Isabel Rodero. Jorge’s journey began with two formative years alongside Bernard Noblet at the legendary Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, followed by time at Vega Sicilia and a decade at Arzuaga Navarro, before returning to his home village of La Aguilera in Ribera del Duero. With an unwavering dedication to excellence and a deep respect for tradition, he has painstakingly gathered some of the region’s finest old vines, crafting wines that have redefined Spanish winemaking. The Dominio del Águila Peñas Aladas Clarete 2020 is a remarkable expression of this heritage. Made using time-honoured techniques, it embodies the classic clarete style of Ribera del Duero—a pale, elegant rosé with remarkable depth. Subtle red fruit aromas, a delicate body, and refreshing acidity make this a truly distinctive wine, offering a glimpse into the history and craftsmanship of this extraordinary estate.

Forward-Looking Ribera

In contrast with the high-alcohol, super-concentrated wines with which Ribera is typically associated, Aguila prizes elegance and restraint in its wines – all made made from carefully selected old-vine plots of Tempranillo, Blanca del País, Bobal, Garnacha, Albillo and Tempranillo Gris. All are farmed organically or biodynamically.

The domaine’s reserva, made from a plot of vines more than 100 years old and aged for 35 months in old French oak, is a masterpiece in concentration with restraint. Also look out for the clarete – an extraordinary barrel-aged rosé-coloured wine made with co-fermented white and red grapes. This traditional style of wine in northern Spain had been largely forgotten in Ribera del Duero until Jorge campaigned to have it recognised in the appellation.
