Dominio del Aguila Albillo Vinas Viejas 2020 showcases the significance of the Albillo grape variety in the Ribera del Duero region. Crafted by Jorge Monzón Pascual and Isabel Rodero, this wine stems from ancient, ungrafted vines cultivated on sandy clay and limestone soils. The meticulous process involves hand-harvesting and whole-cluster fermentation using indigenous yeasts, lasting 10 months. Vinification takes place without bâtonnage or racking, followed by an extended ageing period of 35 months in French oak barrels. The wine reflects its terroir, revealing salty, stony and flinty characteristics.

Forward-Looking Ribera

In contrast with the high-alcohol, super-concentrated wines with which Ribera is typically associated, Aguila prizes elegance and restraint in its wines – all made made from carefully selected old-vine plots of Tempranillo, Blanca del País, Bobal, Garnacha, Albillo and Tempranillo Gris. All are farmed organically or biodynamically.

The domaine’s reserva, made from a plot of vines more than 100 years old and aged for 35 months in old French oak, is a masterpiece in concentration with restraint. Also look out for the clarete – an extraordinary barrel-aged rosé-coloured wine made with co-fermented white and red grapes. This traditional style of wine in northern Spain had been largely forgotten in Ribera del Duero until Jorge campaigned to have it recognised in the appellation.
