Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet 2009 from Domaine Henri Boillot is a Grand Cru white Burgundy from the Côte de Beaune. This wine is a demonstration of Boillot`s precise vinification and commitment to purity, aiming for a structural, complex expression of this specific Grand Cru. This tight structural profile offers concentrated aromas of lemon peel, white flower, smoke and subtle vanilla spice. The palate is linear and intense, showcasing purity and a powerful mineral-driven acidity.

Lovely energy and perfume to the aromas of pineapple, citrus fruit, quinine and honey. Fat, silky and sweet but with plenty of framing minerality giving energy to the mid-palate. This really spreads out to coat the mouth. Builds nicely on the long finish, where hints of exotic fruits are enlivened by dusty minerality.Stephen Tanzer1st September 2010

Father and Son

In some ways, Henri Boillot has one foot in the past and one in the present. His family domaine, which he manages with his son Guillaume, has a history dating back to the 1880s, but the wines produced from their Meursault-based winery are undeniably modern, approachable and ranked among some of the very best in the region. Alongside operating a highly successful négociant business, the Boillot family own around 14 hectares of vineyards in the Côte de Beaune including a Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru monopole in the form of Clos de la Mouchère.

The winery don't shy away from the use of new oak and any overtly woody character is generally well balanced by ripe fruit. The Chardonnays range from citrus driven and fresher at the villages level all the way to ripe, tropical and creamy at the Grand Cru level. The reds are lighter and more elegant than they used to be with Henri's son Guillaume preferring a less extracted style of Pinot Noir.
