Château de Fonsalette Côtes du Rhône is a red blend from the legendary Southern Rhône estate of Château Rayas. The 1996 vintage is a traditional blend of Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah, grown on the sandy and clay soils of the Laurent family`s property. Like Rayas, the winemaking at Fonsalette is resolutely old-fashioned, utilising whole-cluster fermentation and ancient large oak foudres. This approach results in a wine of profound aromatic complexity and an ethereal, weightless texture. It displays notes of dried strawberries, sandalwood, leather and the unique earthy funk associated with this prestigious estate`s specific winemaking style.

Moving to the reds, the 2012 Fonsalette Cotes du Rhone, which was tasted from multiple barrels, offers gorgeous Grenache character with white pepper, green herbs and pine-like notes that are grounded by a superb core of fruit. Medium to full-bodied, beautifully fresh and elegant, it should be an outstanding bottle of wine with 12-15 years of longevity.

Medium red. Cherry, black pepper and an exotic note of apricot on the nose. Dense and mouthfilling; complex but not especially fruity today, with a strong peppery quality. Has enough sweet middle to support the strong but evenly distributed tannins. Persistent finish. This should age extremely well for a Côtes du Rhône.Stephen Tanzer1st January 1999
