Domaine Michel & Stephane Ogier Côte-Rôtie is the flagship wine of the Ogier family domaine in Ampuis, spearheaded by the dynamic and talented Stephane Ogier. Still a youngster in French winemaking terms, Stephane Ogier is an ambitious, Burgundy-trained winemaker with a goal of sustaining his family`s reputation for creating fine, ageworthy terroir Côte-Rôtie wines, while expanding the family`s reach into other Rhône appellations. "This red displays a beautifully pure and seemingly unadorned beam of cassis, blackberry and cherry fruit that glides along, but gently inlaid notes of singed iron, black tea and juniper peek through on the back end, while finely beaded acidity lets everything hang together wonderfully. This offers more precision rather than the showy fruit of the vintage." Wine Spectator, 2012

Not surprisingly, the 2009s are softer, more front end-loaded wines. The 2009 Cote Rotie Classique saw about 60-70% new oak casks in this concentrated vintage. It reveals a dense purple color along with a beautiful bouquet of frying lard and bacon, blackberries, raspberries, forest floor and spring flowers. The sweetness of the tannin, the wine's opulent, fleshy mouthfeel and long, layered finish make for a sumptuous Cote Rotie to drink over the next 10-15 years.

Ogier's wines just keep getting better and better, so if you haven't yet jumped on the Ogier bandwagon, it's time to do so. Michel Ogier, and more recently his son, Stephane, are the leading craftsmen in terms of wines from the steep hillsides north of the old Roman town of Vienne. These are still entitled to only a VDP designation, but current vintages are the finest he has yet produced.

Vivid ruby. High-pitched aromas of red and dark berry preserves, potpourri and minerals, with a sexy note of Asian spices mounting with air. Juicy, focused and pure, offering palate-staining black raspberry and cherry flavors and subtle smokiness. The mineral note carries through the long, spicy, floral finish, which shows excellent clarity. I also had the chance to retaste the 2008 Cote-Rotie back in New York and found it open-knit, spicy and very floral, with intense red fruit character and a silky texture. I have little doubt that it will age nicely on its balance but had no trouble drinking it right now.Josh Raynolds1st March 2012
