Domaine Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne 2012 is a Grand Cru Chardonnay from the Côte de Beaune in Burgundy. This estate is the only one in Burgundy to produce exclusively from Grand Cru vineyards, and the 2012 release is a study in power and verticality. It offers a profile of green apple, crushed stones and lemon oil, supported by a driving acidity and a tight, mineral-led structure. This vintage is noted for its intensity and youthful austerity, suggesting a wine with significant potential for cellar evolution. It is a linear and energetic Grand Cru that reflects the limestone terroir of the En Charlemagne climat with crystalline precision.

Bright yellow with green highlights. Explosive aromas of ripe peach, crushed stone, lavender sea salt and spices. Wonderfully rich and broad without any excess weight, with strong acidity and crushed-stone minerality leavening the fine-grained flavors of orange cream and fleur de sel. Best today on the slowly building, refined finish, which leaves the mouth vibrating with stone and white grapefruit. This wine appears to be shutting down in bottle, which de la Morinière notes is typical for his Corton-Charlemagne after a year or so. Outstanding potential here: I may be underrating this wine today.Stephen Tanzer1st September 2015
