Rangen de Thann is known as one of the best representations of terroir in the whole of Alsace and produces some of the finest Pinot Gris in the land. Characterised by gentle slopes at around 350m of altitude and south facing slopes with dark volcanic soils which deliver Pinot Gris of intense concentration and texture.

Although 1995 was not a textbook vintage, the Pinot Gris were amongst the most promising with great richness and structure.

- Amber-gold--the first wine of this vertical tasting with such a deep color. Orange marmalade, lemon and tropical fruits on the nose, which is strongly marked by spicy botrytis. Then nectar-like on the palate, conveying outstanding depth of fruit; really expands in the mouth and shows great richness without any undue weight. Finishes very long and classically dry; the numbers tell the story: 13 g/l residual sugar with 9 g/l of total acidity. Olivier Humbrecht recalls that due to a long fermentation, the wine ended up tasting dry and a bit warm (it's carrying 14.7% alcohol), but as the acidity was also very high, the wine doesn't seem especially big or fat.
