Clos Fourtet is a Premier Grand Cru Classé [B] in Saint-Émilion with a 19-hectare vineyard area. The property is currently owned by Philippe Cuvelier, a Parisian entrepreneur whose main business is a paper and office supplies company. This release is the 2009 vintage of its flagship wine, a blend of 88% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Cabernet Franc. The nose is beautifully scented, with ripe fruit aromas of blackcurrant and blackberry coming through. Full and complex on the palate with tight-knit tannins and persistent finish.

The 2009 Clos Fourtet was picked between September 28 and October 13 at 34 hl/ha. It offers quite precocious red berry fruit on the nose, hints of kirsch and marmalade, attractively balanced with a background figgy aroma. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins and a silver line of acidity. Perhaps there is a touch of Brettanomyces, but it is very minor and does not subdue the fruit. Boasting impressive weight and girth on the finish, this is a wonderful Clos Fourtet that is just hitting its stride. Tasted at the Vinous Icons 2009 Bordeaux tasting in Miami in November 2024. Very sweet and luscious. A little treacly. Sweet and polished and opulent. Open and beguiling. There is enough lift and refreshment on the finish, which is still a bit dry. (JR)
