90 Vinous
(two-thirds of these vines are planted near the entrance to the castle and the other two-thirds at the bottom of the slope, according to Vincent; 50% vendange entier): Good dark red. Ripe but subdued aromas of black cherry, game and chocolate; slightly high-toned (the pH here is a relatively high 3.7). Large-scaled, broad and ripe but with a nicely restrained sweetness to the flavors of cherry liqueur, rose petal and lavender. Finishes more savory and less fruity than the Clos du Roi, with good medicinal reserve and substantial dusty tannins. Very good potential here but tricky to taste today.Stephen Tanzer1st January 2014

Domaine de la Vougeraie

Top Flight Biodynamic Burgundy

Located between the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune in Prémeaux, Domaine de la Vougeraie was founded by Jean-Claude Boisset in 1999. The name was inspired by domaine’s significant vineyard holdings in the village of Vougeot, which is also Boisset’s home.

One of Burgundy’s leading domaines, Vougeraie owns about 40ha of vineyard in more than 30 different appellations of Burgundy, including the Grands Crus of Clos Vougeot, Musigny, Bonnes-Mares, Charmes Chambertin, Mazoyères, Corton Clos du Roi and Corton Charlemagne. The domaine vineyards have been managed biodynamically since 2001. The highest possible production values and strictest levels of quality control, including a state-of-the-art sorting table, are maintained for the domaine’s entire range of wines. The domaine’s general manager, Sylvie Poillot, has managed the winemaking team since Pierre Vincent departed for Domaine Leflaive.
