Lucien Le Moine is a small, boutique négociant house founded in 1999 by Mounir and Rotem Saouma with production limited to 100 barrels per year of solely Premier and Grand Cru vineyards. Their Clos Vougeot Grand Cru is sourced from the bottom, middle and top of the vineyard, often with only a barrel of each that are then blended together. The 2016 is bold, rich and svelte, with exceptional balance throughout.
Vinous
(two barrels from three origins, in the top, middle and bottom of the Clos): Good dark red. Sexy dark berries and musky black cherry on the nose. Juicy and imploded on the palate. with its dark berry and smoke flavors communicating a rather cool character and little in the way of easy sweetness. Showing a bit less energy in the early going than the Clos Saint-Denis. Saouma says the fatness comes from the top of the Clos, and the coolness from the bottom. One of the most austere of these 2016s today; am I underrating this wine's complexity?Stephen Tanzer1st January 2018

A Boutique Négociant

Founded by Mounir and Rotem Saouma in the late 1990s, Lucien Le Moine is a small, quality focussed négociant that bottle wines from some of the greatest Premier and Grand Cru vineyards in the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. The team aim to bottle around 100 barrels each vintage, which can sometimes represent over 60 different wines. There are no contracts with the growers and no winemaking requirements from Lucien Le Moine beyond the stipulation that the wines be of the highest possible quality.

The wines arrive with Lucien Le Moine fully vinified and Rotem and Mounir focus solely on élévage, racking the wines into new oak barrels made to their own particular specifications. It's tricky to generalise across dozens of wines from many different crus, but both the whites and reds tend towards the generous with a ripeness of fruit and a fullness of body that is rare in the Côte d'Or.
