Domaine Jean Grivot is one of the leading wine producers in Burgundy. The estate is currently run by the husband-and-wife team Étienne Grivot and Marielle, who took over from Étienne’s father Jean Grivot in 1987. The domaine has been assembled over several generations to its current size of 15.5 hectares and includes holdings in three Grand Cru sites. Echézeaux, Richebourg and Clos de Vougeot where this cuvée comes from. The 2002 vintage is beautifully mature now, delivering notes of black cherries, barnyard, spices, earth minerality and some undergrowth.

The 2002 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a very attractive bouquet with brambly red fruit mixed with bacon fat (or perhaps more like freshly sliced mortadella), hints of morels emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, the core of red fruit mixed with sea salt and black pepper towards the persistent finish. Superb. Tasted at Sarah Marsh MW’s 2002 Red Burgundy tasting.Neal Martin1st May 2019
