Domaine Jean Grivot is one of the leading wine producers in Burgundy. The estate is currently run by the husband-and-wife team Étienne Grivot and Marielle, who took over from Étienne’s father Jean Grivot in 1987. The domaine has been assembled over several generations to its current size of 15.5 hectares and includes holdings in three Grand Cru sites. Echézeaux, Richebourg and Clos de Vougeot where this cuvée comes from. The 2001 vintage shows aromas of mature raspberries, flowers, spices, dry autumn leaves, nutty oak and a hint of char. On the palate, it is a medium-bodied wine, with excellent concentration and length.

Good bright dark red. Redcurrant, licorice and a whiff of resin on the nose; showed a more primary black cherry aroma as it opened in the glass. Round, broad and moderately sweet, with black cherry and licorice flavors and good life in the mouth. Finishes with firm, building, granular tannins that avoid dryness.Stephen Tanzer1st March 2004

Cask sample. Attractive if light scent. Rich spread of flavours. Slightly charred notes. Lots of fruit. Very, very chewy and serious. Very dry end. Will probably get there, but the palate is stiffening at the moment. Full and a bit stodgy. Respectable and yeomanlike, but not racy and aristocratic. (JR)Jancis Robinson31st January 2003
