Domaine Jean Grivot is one of the leading wine producers in Burgundy. The estate is currently run by the husband-and-wife team Étienne Grivot and Marielle, who took over from Étienne’s father Jean Grivot in 1987. The domaine has been assembled over several generations to its current size of 15.5 hectares and includes holdings in three Grand Cru sites. Echézeaux, Richebourg and Clos de Vougeot where this cuvée comes from. The 1990 vintage is considered a collectible year in Burgundy, with many of the top Domaines producing exceptional wines.

Vinous
The 1990 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a wide fading on the rim and seems light in colour for a 1990. It has certainly remained youthful and fresh on the nose: raspberry, crushed strawberry, a touch of iron filings, slightly herbal in style but certainly attractive. The palate is medium-bodied with a faint of furry tannin, strict and linear, strangely bereft of the roundness and voluptuousness that the 1990 vintage conferred upon its wines. A second bottle shows just a touch more precision but it is a wine that I could not warm to, missing a little charm and personality. Was that the result of consultant Guy Accad who was advising at the time? Who knows. Tasted at the Clos de Vougeot retrospective at Clos de Vougeot.Neal Martin1st May 2019
