Located in the northern part of Morey-Saint-Denis, Clos de la Roche is one of the 33 grand cru vineyards in Burgundy. Estates with major holdings in the vineyard include Domaine Ponsot, Domaine Armand Rousseau and Domaine Dujac, which owns 1.46 hectares of vines. The 2013 vintage produced some genuinely superb wines, and this release is no exception. Impeccably made for a very hot year.

The 2003 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru has an earthy, animally, slightly brettanomyces-affected bouquet, and yet despite its faults, I cannot help falling for its charms. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannins considering the vineyard; pleasant raspberry and cranberry fruit segue into a lightly spiced finish of black pepper, leather and sage. It does fade a little rapidly, but it makes a decent effort. Tasted at Sarah Marsh’s 2003/2004 tasting in London.Neal Martin1st June 2020

A Focus on Terroir

Founded in the late 1960s by Jacques Seysses, who purchased and renovated Domaine Graillet in Morey-St-Denis. The estate is currently run by Jacques' sons Jeremy and Alec, who farm around 17 hectares of vines across the Côte including holdings in Echezeaux, Clos de la Roche, Charmes-Chambertin and Bonnes Mares.

A natural approach is taken in the vineyard and cellar with the estate moving from organic farming to fully biodynamic in the mid 2000s, receiving their certification in 2011. The team's focus is on elegance - temperatures are controlled to keep alcohol in check and also limit malolactic fermentation while juice from the crush is fed into the cellar by gravity only without the use of pumping. The wines of Domaine Dujac represent pure, balanced expressions of their respective terroirs.
