Château Clerc Milon is a Fifth Growth property located in the Pauillac appellation. Owned by the Baron Philippe de Rothschild family, the château makes classic, Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant wines, including a second wine named Pastourelle de Clerc Milon. This is the 2009 vintage of its main offering, a blend composed of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot and 1% Carmenère. On the nose, expect aromas of cassis, lead pencil, vanilla and earthy elements. The palate reveals plenty of structure, freshness and concentration.

The 2009 Clerc-Milon has a rather conservative bouquet that seems to have closed down in recent years, yet retains fine delineation with blackberry, wild hedgerow and subtle cassis, almost ink-like aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, surprisingly high in acidity given the vintage with a slightly muddled finish. I have encountered better bottles. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting. Neal Martin1st March 2019
