Cheval Blanc was effectively created in 1832 when a portion of the vineyards belonging to Chateau Figeac were sold off to M. Laussac-Fourcaud. Given the highest possible rank in the appellation, Premier Grand Cru Classé (A), Cheval Blanc`s Cabernet Franc-heavy blend is considered by many to be the pinnacle of winemaking in France.

2000 was fairly warm and very dry, resulting in concentrated and powerful wines. Coinciding with the change of centuries, this is a very great vintage with an outstandingly intense bouquet.

100 The Wine Independent
A blend of 53% Merlot and 47% Cabernet Franc, the 2000 Cheval Blanc has a medium garnet-brick color. It explodes with an amazingly complex array of fragrant earth and exotic spice scents, leading to a core of raspberry preserves, cherry cola, dried mulberries, and violets, plus hints of licorice, iron ore, and unsmoked cigars. The palate is gracefully styled and medium-bodied with layer upon layer of fruit, earth, and perfumed spice flavors, framed by silky tannins and beautiful tension, finishing long and minerally. The 2000 Cheval Blanc is a wine that I have encountered more than a dozen times. Now at just over 20 years of age (how time flies - I remember tasting this from barrel), it has a lovely, quite beguiling bouquet of brambly red berries, iron rust, Provençal herbs and clove, powerful and somehow enveloping. The peppery palate is medium-bodied with quite firm, stocky tannins and good backbone, though coming after a vertical of recent vintages, it feels more rustic and feral. As Pierre-Olivier Clouet noted, there are fewer "pixels" in this millennial Cheval Blanc, but you can’t help falling for its charms. Ready to drink now but will age for the next 20–30 years. Very dark and healthy looking. More complexity and savour than the late 1990s vintages – not so obviously sweet and oaky. Lighter in weight though. Falls away a little on the finish. The difference between this and the Petit Cheval tasted side by side was not so enormous. Light and silky – not rich and oaky. If anything rather weak. Certainly not a standout. I seem to remember preferring the 1998 at the Bibendum tasting with Pierre Lurton reported on here. (JR)

The Star of Saint-Émilion

With a history dating back as least as far as the 16th century, Château Cheval Blanc is considered by many to be one of the finest estates in Bordeaux. Located on the Right Bank in the celebrated Saint-Émilion appellation. One of only four wines to be ranked Premier Grand Cru Classé A in the classification of Saint-Émilion wine, the estate has three main soil types: clay, gravel and sand. Red grape plantings are made up of 60% Cabernet Franc and 40% Merlot and are used to produce wines with marvellous aromatics, with floral and smoky nuances, aged 100% in new oak.

In addition to the highly-coveted first wine, the estate produces a second red wine, Le Petit Cheval which made its first appearance in the 1988 vintage. A white wine, known as Le Petit Cheval Blanc, is also made, produced from predominantly Sauvignon Blanc together with a smaller percentage of Sémillon.
